Powered Anode Rod – Getting Rid of Smelly Water/rotten egg smell in your water heater

There are many reasons why your hot water smells like rotten eggs, but the most common one is sulfur bacteria (SRB). These bacteria feed on sulfur, and they produce hydrogen sulfide gas as waste.
It is the gas that dissolves in water that causes the water to smell like spoiled eggs. Though the smell is bad, the bacteria in the water are not hazardous to your health. The chemical reaction between your water, which often contains high levels of magnesium, and the magnesium anode rod in the water heater tank is also a common cause of this problem. You may be able to stop the chemical reaction by removing the anode rod. However, we don't recommend you do that because the water heater will not have any corrosion protection. The water heater will corrode faster and cost you much more to replace when it breaks.
As opposed to sacrificial anode rods, Corrosion Guard Powered Anode Rods are a long-term solution that does not require maintenance. Powered anodes can be installed in a wide range of water heaters including 10 to 120 gallon ones. In contrast to sacrificial anode rods, powered anode rods use electrical pulses to prevent corrosion damaging the interior of your tank. These pulses completly stops the corrosion process.
